| National Cardiovascular Medicine Leader to Keynote the Tenth Annual LifeScience Alley® Conference & Expo |
MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA – (July 12, 2011) - LifeScience Alley announced today the luncheon general session keynote speaker for the Tenth Annual LifeScience Alley Conference & Expo, to be held at the Minneapolis Convention Center on December 7, 2011. Leslie A. Saxon, MD, will be delivering the address at this year’s conference spotlighting “Advancing Medical Technology.” Dr. Saxon's talk will focus on her work in body computingand networked communications.
Leslie A. Saxon, MD, is chief, USC Division of Cardiovascular Medicine and executive director, USC Center for Body Computing, Keck School of Medicine, University of Southern California. Dr. Saxon specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of arrhythmias in patients with congestive heart failure. In 2010, she formed the USC Center for Body Computing (CBC), headquartered at the USC Keck School of Medicine. By engaging thought leading physicians, engineers, virtual reality experts, game developers, mobile technology experts and an Oscar winning producer, the CBC studies and works to create the future of wireless medicine. CBC initiatives include work to study how mobile phones can be used in the prevention of illnesses and epidemics and studying the role of social media in health care, medical research, sports, app development and conferences and seminars.
“Medical science has evolved tremendously in recent years but the model of medical care delivery has in many ways stayed the same," said Saxon. "Health care will soon be radically changed by wireless technology, which has the potential to enhance the patient experience and improve health care outcomes.”
“We are seeing more and more Minnesota-based medical device manufacturers entering the remote physiological monitoring space,” said Dana Boyle, vice president of community engagement for LifeScience Alley. “Whether they are developing active implantable technologies, smart external devices or remote telemedicine applications, they are combining Minnesota’s expertise in medical device design and miniaturized computing technology. We are thrilled to bring Dr. Saxon here, since she is truly a pioneering leader in this emerging field.”
