Worldwide Health Director for Microsoft to deliver luncheon keynote address at the 8th Annual LifeScience Alley® Conference & Expo

MINNEAPOLIS (September 21, 2009) - Dr. Bill Crounse, senior director of worldwide health for the Microsoft Corporation, will deliver the luncheon keynote address at the 8th Annual LifeScience Alley Conference & Expo on December 9 at the Minneapolis Convention Center. In his presentation, titled “The Impact of IT & The Net on Health and Health Care”, Dr. Crounse will explore the various ways in which continuing leaps in technology and inter-connectivity are impacting how we manage our health and how health care is delivered.   

As a senior director at Microsoft, Dr. Crounse is responsible for providing thought leadership, vision and strategy for Microsoft technologies and solutions in the healthcare provider industry.  He has written and produced numerous articles, audio-casts, and videos for “House Calls for Healthcare Professionals” on www.microsoft.com/health, and is the founder and primary contributor to Microsoft’s Health Blog. He travels nationally and internationally to support the use of information technology as a way to improve health care quality and safety. 

“There is no shortage of health information available to providers and patients,” states Dr. Crounse.  “However, while our health care system has become more adept at capturing and storing health data, we need to focus on the application and sharing of this information to improve the quality, safety, and efficacy of patient care.  Not only could we improve the health of individual patients, we could also contribute to clinical research and basic scientific discovery.”

Dr. Crounse is known locally and nationally for his work in medical communications and information technology.He was Medical Editor for KIRO-TV, Channel 7 (CBS) in Seattle and also served as a physician broadcaster andmedical editor for KOMO-TV (ABC Seattle), ABC Network News (The Health Show), Lifetime Medical Television (Physicians Journal Update), The Discovery Channel, and Medical News Network.

Prior to joining Microsoft, Dr. Crounse was Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Information Officer for Overlake Venture Center and Overlake Hospital Medical Center, a not-for-profit community hospital honored by “Hospitals & Health Networks” as one of the nations “most wired” and most innovative hospitals. Prior to joining Overlake Hospital in 1995, Dr. Crounse was a physician and medical executive with Virginia Mason Medical Center and Group Health in Seattle.

LifeScience Alley® Eighth Annual Conference & Expo Showcase to Highlight Innovative New Technologies

Eight organizations will exhibit novel life science technologies.

MINNEAPOLIS – (September 2, 2009) – LifeScience Alley® announced today that eight life science organizations from around the United States and Canada will be exhibiting cutting-edge technologies at the association’s Annual Conference on Dec. 9 as part of the New Technology Showcase.  Three of the eight selected organizations will be presenting their technologies during the luncheon general session in front of an anticipated 1,600+ national and international life science professionals.  The Annual Conference, being held at the Minneapolis Convention Center, features the New Technology Showcase with the objective of highlighting leading life science technologies that have the potential to greatly impact health care delivery.

AUM Cardiovascular of Minneapolis will be presenting a non-invasive, hand-held, fast, extremely affordable coronary artery disease assessment device; Exos Corporation of St. Paul, Minn., will be presenting a thermoformable lamination technology for external musculoskeletal stabilization and support; and VitalMedix, Inc. of Hudson, Wis., will be presenting a proprietary formulation to sustain trauma victims with severe blood loss until surgical intervention.

These organizations will be joined in the New Technology Showcase exhibit area, located in the heart of the exhibit hall, by the other five finalists: Access Genetics, an Eden Prairie, Minn., company exhibiting an integrated system of web-enabled molecular diagnostics, collaborative telemedicine, and materials management with turnkey support; Mespere Lifesciences, Inc. of Waterloo, Ontario exhibiting a non-invasive, hand-held, real-time venous visualization

technology; Minnow Medical, Inc. a San Diego-based company exhibiting a non-ablative, energy-delivering balloon angioplasty to treat occlusive vascular; Nonin Medical of  Plymouth,

Minn., exhibiting a non-invasive, near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) measuring cerebral cortex blood oxygen saturation; and TransEndoscopic Surgical Technologies, Inc., a Minneapolis-based company exhibiting technologies for closure systems, anastomosis methods and sterile access devices for endoscopic surgical approach.

The New Technology Showcase, sponsored by Boston Scientific for the fourth consecutive year, provides an opportunity for companies around the world to send in applications to exhibit technologies representing medical devices, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, and health care delivery.  Steve Mertens, sr. vice president of research and development with the cardiovascular division at Boston Scientific, and current chair of the LifeScience Alley board of directors, asserts “Identifying and highlighting breakthrough technology is important to driving the life science industry.  The New Technology showcase does just that by providing emerging and established companies an opportunity to introduce their most innovative products and therapies to other members of the life science community and key decision makers”.

About the Selection Process

This year’s finalists were selected by a group of expert industry judges.  Presenting and exhibiting organizations are selected based on the novelty of their technology, its market potential, and the impact it represents to the life sciences and health care delivery.

MINNEAPOLIS - (August 19, 2009)Dr. Nicholas F. LaRusso, the Charles H. Weinman endowed Professor of Medicine, current Director of the Mayo Clinic Center for Innovation, and a Distinguished Investigator of the Mayo Foundation, will deliver the breakfast keynote address at the Eighth Annual LifeScience Alley Conference & Expo on Dec. 9, 2009.   His address titled “Transforming the Health Care Experience” will discuss new models of care that will revolutionize the experience and delivery of health care in the 21st century.  

“We at Mayo are focused on redefining the health care experience for patients and providers,” states Dr. LaRusso.  “Our Center for Innovation team is currently developing and implementing models intended to radically transform the way patients manage their health, interact with their providers and derive greater value from the care they receive.  The resulting system will reward improved health outcomes and drive the adoption of healthier choices.  What roles will innovators throughout the field of medicine play in shaping this new environment?”

Dr. LaRusso, a graduate of New York Medical College, received training in internal medicine and gastroenterology at Mayo Clinic.  He completed a National Institute of Health (NIH) fellowship in the laboratory of Alan Hofmann, and went on to serve as a guest investigator in the laboratory of the Noble laureate, Christian de Duve, at Rockefeller University.

A double board certified physician and professor of biochemistry and molecular biology, Dr. LaRusso is also a member of the American Association of Clinical Investigation and the Association of American Physicians. He is the former editor of “GASTROENTEROLOGY” and past president of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD) and the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA).

2009 LifeScience Alley® Conference & Expo to Highlight Innovative New Technologies

Now Accepting Applications for New Technology Showcase

MINNEAPOLIS, MN (May 18, 2009) As part of the 8th Annual LifeScience Alley Conference & Expo on December 9, 2009, the New Technology Showcase will highlight leading life science technologies with the potential to greatly impact the life sciences and health care delivery.  Boston Scientific Corporation is sponsoring the New Technology Showcase for the 4th consecutive year.  Interested companies must submit an application, found at www.lifesciencealley.org, by Friday, June 26, to be considered.

Each year, the New Technology Showcase provides emerging and established companies with an opportunity to introduce their most innovative products and therapies to other companies and life science decision makers.  This year, LifeScience Alley is actively seeking applicants from all facets of the life sciences, including the medical device, pharmaceutical/biopharmaceutical, biotechnology, health care provider, food and nutrition and renewable energy sectors.  Qualified applicants should have a novel life science technology capable of being publicly displayed and representing a sizable market potential.  U.S. and international companies of all sizes fitting these criteria are invited to apply.

Applications will be reviewed by expert industry judges, leading to the selection of seven organizations to participate in this year’s Showcase.  The top three organizations by ranking will be invited to present their technologies in front of the full conference during the luncheon general session.  All seven selected organizations will receive a complimentary exhibit booth as well as a variety of advanced promotion.
